This statement may be updated from time to time so please check back periodically.

What information of yours does the cmcc.ca site collect and use?

We collect two types of information from you, "Anonymous Information" and "Identifiable Information".

Anonymous Information refers to information that cannot be traced back to an identifiable specific individual. Each time a visitor comes to the cmcc.ca site, CMCC collects information that is necessary to improve the overall quality of the visitor's online experience. CMCC collects the visitor's IP address, referral data (e.g., the address of the last URL a user visited prior to clicking through to cmcc.ca), and browser and platform type (e.g., a Netscape browser on a Macintosh platform). CMCC also collects aggregate search terms from its search services for internal reporting, service improvement and targeted advertising.

CMCC also uses Anonymous Information to perform statistical analyses of the collective characteristics and behavior of our registered users and visitors, and to measure user demographics and interests regarding specific areas of the cmcc.ca site. Without such data, we would be unable to identify the most popular areas of the cmcc.ca site, and we would be unable change and update the content and services appropriately. No Identifiable Information will be used during these activities.

In addition to this Anonymous Information, CMCC may also collect Identifiable Information, being information that tells us specifically who is using the cmcc.ca site, such as your name, phone number and e-mail address. Wherever and whenever CMCC collects Identifiable Information, we include a link to this Privacy Statement on that page.

CMCC collects Identifiable Information in the following ways from different parts of the cmcc.ca site:

a. Identifiable Information is gathered when you voluntarily register for an account on cmcc.ca. If you choose to register you must provide CMCC with your name, e-mail address, and may also provide additional information such as your address and phone number. Once you register, you will have a cmcc.ca login ID and password. You will be able to take full advantage of the many offerings on the cmcc.ca site, and will enjoy a customized experience based on your profile (e.g. student, alumni, faculty, etc.).

b. Identifiable Information is also gathered when you register for courses, make an on-line donation or register for an event. The information asked for is limited to what is required in order to provide you with, and confirm, the services you are requesting.

c. Identifiable Information, including your payment information, is gathered when you make on-line Supply Centre & Bookstore purchases.

d. In addition to when you are registering for services or purchasing products on the cmcc.ca site, CMCC may ask you for Identifiable Information at other times, including certain necessary information when you take a survey, agree to participate in research projects, or agree to receiving promotional messages about services or products offered by CMCC or one of our partners.

With your specific permission, the cmcc.ca site may, from time to time, use your information to contact you about changes or enhancements to services on the cmcc.ca site. If you indicate that you were interested in receiving promotional offers, your Identifiable Information will be used for such communications.

What are "cookies" and how does CMCC use them?

A cookie is a small text file containing a unique identification number that is transferred from a web site to the hard drive of your computer so that the web site may identify you and allow you to move within the cmcc.ca site without having to sign in each time. This unique number identifies your computer to CMCC whenever you visit the cmcc.ca site. A cookie will NOT let a web site know any Identifiable Information about you, such as your real name and address. The coding in the cookies CMCC sets lets us know that you are using a particular computer but nothing more. Since cookies are only text files, they cannot run on your computer, search your computer for other information or transmit any information to anyone.

To help serve you better CMCC uses cookies to:

a. Help us remember who you are through your browser settings so that CMCC can offer and provide a personalized experience. CMCC uses cookies to store and sometimes track information about our users’ activities on the cmcc.ca site. Cookies also allow us to save passwords, billing/shipping addresses and preferences for you so that you will not have to re-enter them the next time you visit.

b. Store your selections when you are using the Supply Centre & Bookstore shopping cart feature. The most common cause of items disappearing from your shopping cart is when cookies are either not supported or disabled.

c. Measure traffic patterns. Without cookies, it could be difficult for CMCC to know that certain services are more popular than others. This information also helps us to better understand when to offer new services.

d. Estimate audience size. Cookies help us know whether or not users have seen particular content.

The use of cookies is now an industry standard, and you will find them used on most major web sites. Most browsers are initially set up to accept cookies. If you prefer, you can reset your browser either to notify you when you have received a cookie, or to refuse to accept cookies. You should understand that while CMCC does not require you to use cookies, certain functions would not function properly if you set your browser to not accept cookies.

With whom does the cmcc.ca site share the information that is collected?

We will not rent, sell, loan or otherwise market your personal information to any third party outside CMCC without your explicit consent.

In order to provide you with the best possible content and services that match your interests, the cmcc.ca site has relationships with many highly qualified service providers who host databases and provide applications on behalf of CMCC. Due to our service provider relationships, your personal information may be processed and/stored in a foreign country where it may be accessible to law enforcement and national security authorities of that jurisdiction.

CMCC may also be required by law enforcement or judicial authorities here in Canada to provide information on individual users to the appropriate governmental authorities.

How can you access or edit your information?

The cmcc.ca site provides its registered users the ability to access and edit the identifiable information in their user profiles once they have logged in. You can also contact CMCC at any time in order to update your information.

How can you opt-out?

You can opt-out of receiving information on cmcc.ca site updates and new services, as well as direct e-mail offers from selected cmcc.ca site partners and sponsors. The process to opt out of most cmcc.ca site e-mail materials is the same as the process for editing user information profiles described above. If opting out will have certain consequences on the products or services CMCC can provide you with, we will let you know.

Whenever possible, CMCC also provides you with the option of not including the Identifiable Information you provide to us in directories or other CMCC publications.

What kinds of security procedures are in place to protect against the loss, misuse or alteration of your information?

The cmcc.ca site has security measures in place to attempt to protect you against the loss, misuse and alteration of your user data under our control. In all cases, your information is retained in secure facilities, protected from unauthorized access and kept only as long as is reasonably required. Only authorized employees who have a need to know your information for the purposes described in this statement have access to the information you choose to provide to us.

CMCC has imposed strict rules on cmcc.ca site employees who have access to the databases that store user information or to the servers that host data on behalf of CMCC. While we cannot guarantee that loss, misuse or alteration to data will not occur, we make every effort to prevent such unfortunate occurrences. For example, we employ Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol to encrypt your Identifiable Information when it is transmitted to us. If your browser is capable of working with "strong encryption" (128-bit encryption), our servers will negotiate that with your browser. If your browser supports standard encryption (40-bit), our servers will work with this as well. We will not accept personal data on any page that is not SSL enabled.

You are ultimately responsible for the security of your cmcc.ca site Login ID and password. Please take care when using and storing them. CMCC recommends that you do not divulge your password to anyone. You should log out of your browser at the end of each computer session to ensure that others cannot access your Identifiable Information, especially if you share a computer with someone else or are using a computer in a public place like a library or Internet cafe. CMCC is not liable for any illegal use of your Identifiable Information that is beyond our reasonable control.

CMCC welcomes your comments regarding this Privacy Statement. If you believe that CMCC has not adhered to this statement, please contact us at communications@cmcc.ca. We will use commercially reasonable efforts to promptly determine and remedy the problem.

You may also contact us if you would like to obtain a copy of CMCC’s institutional Privacy Policy.
